What is a citizenship certificate?

The citizenship certificate is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that proves your status as a Canadian citizen.

Each certificate has a unique number and specifies some necessary information, such as:

  • Your photo does not appear on the citizenship certificate. 

Who can apply for a citizenship certificate:

  • All Canadians 18 years of age or older can apply for a citizenship certificate. A parent can apply for a citizenship certificate for their minor child. 
  • If you are not sure if you are a Canadian citizen, you can apply for a citizenship certificate to verify your status. The government can confirm whether you are a Canadian citizen or not.

To obtain your citizenship certificate, you must:

  • Complete the application package,
  • You must fill out the form specifying the surname, first names, address, date of birth, city of birth of you and your parents, and the method of obtaining your nationality (by attribution, acquisition, or naturalization).

You must provide the following documents:

  • a family record book, a complete copy of your birth certificate, a full copy of your husband’s birth certificate, other documents justifying your situation

You must:

  • Return all citizenship certificates you have in your possession.
  • Complete the application package.
  • Provide legal documents that prove your name or sex change.
  • Pay the fees,

  • Automatic citizenship certificate for new citizens
